OT: What are you paying where you live?
Then I went to Safeway for basics. When I got to the checkout and saw that the peaches I thought were on sale for $1.49 a lb. were actually $3.99 a lb......I freaked. It was $4.75 for TWO PEACHES!! I tried to be sane when I told the checker to take the two peaches off the bill and she winked at me so I knew she knew how ridiculous the price was. I have to pay so close attention to prices these days. Our gasoline now on Maui is back up to $3.75 a gallon. What the hell happened? I know oil is not back up to $150 a barrel!!
Other prices...just to give you something to compare.....lettuce $1.99 for a head of romaine at Longs.....$7.99 for a gallon of milk....bananas (here where they grow everywhere)......$1.59 a lb.!! OK..a dozen eggs.....$3.99! A can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup....$3.49!
We all live all over this country and I am so curious if any of you are facing prices like these. At the moment, I am upset.......and realize I have to make major changes in simple things like......eating!
My best bargain of the day was the three little t-shirts for my grandson for $10.00. That was a deal!
Thanks for letting me blow off steam....and I would appreciate hearing how things are where you live.

Please let me kno
Here is Portage, which is higher than some places in Indiana simply because of living closer to Chicago and the mills around here (the mill rats make a decent living) so you can kind of go by this:
eggs...most of time on sale for 46 cents a doz.
milk...1.99 a gallon not on sale 1.49 on sale
bread...the other day I got it on sale for 79 cents
Gas...2.42 a gallon
peaches and nectarines...on sale for 1.48 a pound
bananas...I think there selling for .57 a pound
strawberries...Aldi's has them on sale for .99 a pound and usually at least 1.49 a pound
blueberries...Aldi's has them for .99 a pint but usually they are 2/$3
I sure couldn't afford to live where you are...I would love to but OMG I couldn't afford it...
You sure opened my eyes, Karen and I am glad that you did.
Love and hugs to you, my special sister!
Thank you so much for your comparison....it is making me crazy!! Can you even imagine paying $8.00 for a gallon of milk???
Aloha nui loa,
Maui Karen

Okay, first, I'm going to buy you a baby cow. Do you realize how much money you could make if you owned a milk source??? We'll be RICH. Might even throw in a chicken.'
I'm still shaking my head. San Diego prices are high, they say you pay to live in paradise, well, I don't remember it ever being that bad back home. I don't know how you do it.
Gas---at Sam's w/ 5 cent discount = 2.19 per gal
milk= 2.29 per gal
eggs, 1 doz==.99
bananas= .64 lb
oranges=== talk about sticker shock after living in CA.....69 cents EACH
bag of hearts of romaine (3 heads, cleaned)== 2.79
Yoplait yogurt== 2 for 1$
Not having to pay 7.99 for a gallon of milk to make my latttes? PRICELESS!
Thank you my dear Karen for making me even MORE thankful for leaving CA.
Susan
I had a feeling we were paying more for everything, and appreciate your listing a few essentials. Calif. is closer to our prices than you lucky people who live elsewhere......but still I go nuts when I visit my kids and go to little veggie/fruit stand and find lettuce for 75 cents or peaches for .99 a lbs. I still cannot get over the $3.95 per pound that Safeway was asking for peaches!! I think I might get a case at Costco...probably cost about what six would cost at Safeway!
It is so ironic to me that you pay .64 a lbs. for bananas and we are paying regularly $1.29...and they grow here like weeds! Thankfully I have friends who have banana trees and bring me the little beautiful apple bananas for free...but they are different in that they have to ripen to almost black before they are good. I learned that the hard way.....cutting one up to put on my cereal and it was awful....not ripe enough but looked like it was about to be time to toss out. When they are really ripe...they are unbelievable!
Fun sharing stories from different parts of the country!!

I know where there is a banana tree. Right by the pool at the hotel we stayed at! Sneak in there and pluck some of those little ones! I think you're on to something with Costco. You need to form a little "Karen Co-op." You bring it home then divide it up and split the cost. Mike and I would be in big time trouble. We are both milk drinkers. At least 2 gallons a week!
Gas: $2.85 Bananas: 99c a lb Milk: often $1.99 a gal. Bread: I buy at the Oroweat outlet; day old but still good $1.29 a loaf. I hate to even tell you about the apricots, peaches, apples, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatos, sweet onions, melons, squash, fresh garlic, green beans that are in abundance around here. We're a couple of weeks from ripe tomatoes but friends are reporting them. Wish I could zap them to you. I have fresh apricots in the fridge that have been given to me. Enough that I made freezer jam last week.
Ah, but it is paradise. Good thing you don't eat much anymore. Perhaps a job in salad prep at a restaurant where you can "glean" or eat a meal before you go home? Not making light of this. It is such a necessary part of life and a crime that it has to cost so much. I understand it being more than here, but if Costco can do it why can't Safeway at least come a bit closer?

The gasoline thing is what I find offensive! How can it be $1.00 more here a gallon? I can't even imagine milk at $1.99 a gallon!! You are so right that it is good that I don't eat much anymore!! Yesterday I made a HUGE pot of soup with lots of leftover veggies, chicken, mushrooms, etc. That might last me four days!!
Thanks for your words of wisdom!

This place is where I find TRUTH and COMPARISON....and I think that is a gift beyond understanding. Who would have thought 10 years ago, we could share our experiences in living in different parts of the county while sitting in our bedrooms!
Thanks
